‘Raiden’ Black IPA by Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks

GET OVER HE-oh… Never mind. I win.

I had the pleasure of attending the Coquitlam Craft Beer Festival recently, and Fuggles & Warlock (sweet name) was one of the many participating breweries. I went with a good sized group and had an absolute blast, all while getting absolutely blasted. Of course, I had to check out the Fuggles booth because they make one of my current favorite straight-drinkin’ brews, the ‘Pixel’ Czech-style Pilsner, which I haven’t reviewed it yet, but I will eventually. It’s really good, and I made sure the group I came with was well informed that this beer exists and must be sampled. I tend to not shut up about things I like, I’m sure it gets annoying when coupled with my know-it-all nature and slightly (very) judgmental disposition. Throw a few alcoholic beverages in the mix and I have no idea how I have any friends left.

Shut up, Richard.

I saw this on the shelf from across the store, because that’s what a good label does; stand the fuck out. Lightning in a bottle, and it’s called ‘Raiden’? Come on man! I’d be stupid not to buy this!

Life choices.

I seriously wonder how they are getting away with the label here. There has to be some kind of copyright infringement or something, one would think. It’s pretty clearly a Mortal Kombat reference. My guess is because it’s a small, local brewery that Midway either hasn’t figured it out yet, or straight up doesn’t care. Whatever the case is, I bought it because: Mortal Kombat. That is literally the only reason. It could have been brewed by child laborers using the blood of exploded terrorists and sold by ‘Hitler Is Great’ brewing, and I probably would still have bought it while silently condemning the whole fiasco. Fuckin’ MK man, gotta get it. It’s a work of art!

The pour is a jet black with a slight red hue when back-lit. Has a finger of fine tan head that slowly ebbed to a beautiful hazing, leaving some nice sticky lacing on the glass.

The smells are pepper, black current, grapefruit, flowers and oranges. The hops are nicely balanced against the sweet caramel and roasted marshmallow malt notes. Very unique and enticing aroma.

The tastes are grapefruit, lime zest, mangos, a nutty earthiness, alcohol heat, coffee, brown sugar and burnt toast. It’s a big electric, citrus-fruit hop-bang vs the roasty brown sugar gang. It’s got my attention.

The mouthfeel is medium and fairly smooth. The flavors focus at the back upper portion of the palate and slowly leak downward with citrus bitters. Quite drinkable.

4/5 Very good IPA! Well rounded and unique, this is one of the best F&W I’ve tried! This and the Pixel Pils are going to be making their way in to my fridge regularly from here on out. Great beer. Unique beer. They care about image and marketing! Get some muhfukkin’ Fug in your life!

I drink my beer with an enormous wooden spoon.
